What do all those initials mean?

LAc stands for licensed acupuncturist which is the standard designation given to all practitioners of oriental medicine by the Virginia Board of Medicine. It means that you have completed classroom education and been nationally examined and certified to practice acupuncture in this state.

Dipl. OM stands for Diplomate of Oriental Medicine. This designation is awarded by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM) to those who have passed national certification examinations in acupuncture, basic western medical pathology and Chinese herbs. You must be separately certified in both acupuncture and Chinese herbs to use this designation.

MSOM stands for Master of Science in Oriental Medicine. Each school in the country gives out different degrees in different areas. Primarily based on the notion that our bodies are an intricate, interrelated system of energy patterns, OM evaluates, then treats the presenting symptoms and underlying disharmonies using acupuncture, Chinese herbal therapy, dietary and lifestyle recommendations. Currently this is the highest degree level available.

What to expect:

Your first treatment is the longest often lasting 1 ½ hours which includes a comprehensive health history, initial assessment and treatment strategy, an acupuncture treatment and recommendations for an individualized health program. Follow up visits are approximately 45 mins to 1 hour. A course of treatment often involves multiple treatments depending on the initial presenting problem and your participation in the treatment plan.

Does it hurt?

Acupuncture needles are individually packaged for single use, disposable and extremely thin and flexible. Insertion of needles by a qualified practitioner is relatively painless with minimal, if any discomfort. Many find themselves very relaxed.

Does insurance cover acupuncture treatments?

In most instances, insurance does not cover acupuncture performed by licensed acupuncturists in Virginia. There are exceptions and you should check with your particular plan to see what is covered. Some plans allow MDs, chiropractors and physical therapists to perform acupuncture type needling. In the state of Virginia, there is a parity law that states if an insurance company covers a treatment, in this case acupuncture, they are required to cover it for all health care providers licensed to perform that treatment. Ask Pat for a Parity Form and send it in to your insurance company for reimbursement. Additionally, some businesses offer pretax funds for individuals to access for different types of care. Check with your employer for this option.
